JustUpdateOnline.com – Jakarta. The Jakarta Provincial Government has officially announced that several major public transportation networks will be free to use during the upcoming 2026 New Year celebrations. This policy, which waives fares for Transjakarta, MRT Jakarta, and LRT Jakarta, will be in effect for two days, specifically on December 31, 2025, and January 1, 2026.
In addition to the zero-fare initiative, the city administration is extending the operational hours of these services. On New Year’s Eve, these three transit systems will continue running until 2:00 AM to accommodate the high volume of citizens traveling to and from various celebration hubs across the capital.
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung explained that this decision was finalized following specific discussions aimed at supporting public mobility during the peak of the festivities. He noted that during this period, the frequency of service would remain consistent with peak-hour standards to ensure efficiency.
The Governor clarified that the complimentary service and extended schedule apply exclusively to transportation modes managed by the Jakarta Provincial Government. Consequently, services like the LRT Jabodebek, which is operated by the central government, are not included in this specific program.
To maintain accurate passenger data and tracking, commuters are still required to tap their electronic payment cards at station gates or on buses. The system will record these transactions with a symbolic deduction of just Rp1. Governor Pramono expressed that the core objective of this policy is to provide a sense of security and happiness for all residents as they welcome the new year.
For the 2026 transition, the city has identified eight primary celebration zones. The central festivities will take place at the Bundaran Hotel Indonesia (HI) under the theme “Embrace Diversity, Nurture Hope.” Other designated celebration spots include Sarinah, Dukuh Atas BNI 46, Semanggi, BEI/SCBD, FX Sudirman, Lapangan Banteng, and Jalan MH Thamrin.
Regarding traffic management, Syafrin Liputo, the Head of the Jakarta Transportation Agency, stated that 33 road sections would face situational closures. Traffic will be diverted based on real-time conditions to prevent gridlock. Furthermore, the provincial government has decided not to provide parking spaces around the Bundaran HI area.
This lack of parking is a deliberate strategy to discourage the use of private vehicles and reduce overcrowding. Governor Pramono urged the public to take advantage of the city’s improved transit connectivity, emphasizing that the integrated public transport network is now the most efficient way to navigate the city during major public events.
