This strategy aims to repurpose shopping centers into viable remote working hubs, catering to the evolving professional landscape and the rise of mobile employment.
Airlangga Hartarto, the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, highlighted that this move specifically targets the younger demographic and the burgeoning gig economy. He noted that modern professionals, particularly those in the digital sector and freelance industries, are no longer confined to traditional office settings. To support this shift, the government is encouraging the Indonesian Retailers and Shopping Center Tenants Association (HIPPINDO) to integrate dedicated workstations within retail environments.
During a recent site visit to Pondok Indah Mall in South Jakarta, Airlangga explained that the project is a collaborative effort between local and central authorities. The government plans to provide mentorship programs, while shopping centers are expected to supply the physical infrastructure, including high-speed internet, desks, and refreshments. This ecosystem is designed to foster creativity among digital nomads and entrepreneurs, allowing them to utilize these spaces as their primary base of operations.
The shift reflects a broader change in how urban populations interact with commercial spaces. Industry experts suggest that the concept is a natural progression, as shopping malls have already evolved beyond simple retail outlets. Surya Ananta, a representative from the Association of Indonesian Shopping Center Management (APBI) in Yogyakarta, noted that these venues have transformed into multi-purpose public squares that facilitate dining, leisure, and professional networking.
While many individuals already utilize mall-based cafes for informal meetings, the "Work From Mall" program aims to formalize and enhance these practices. According to industry leaders, the transition requires minimal adjustments, focusing primarily on upgrading amenities such as comfortable seating areas and accessible charging stations.
The inherent advantages of shopping centers—including climate-controlled environments, ample parking, and easy access to food and beverage services—are seen as key factors that will make malls a preferred choice for the modern workforce. This initiative is expected to breathe new life into the retail sector while providing the flexibility that the current generation of workers demands.
