JustUpdateOnline.com – Karawang, President Prabowo Subianto has officially confirmed that Indonesia is now self-sufficient in food production. During a major harvest event in Karawang, West Java, on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, the President highlighted the nation’s success in securing its rice supply throughout 2025. This milestone marks a significant shift away from the country’s previous reliance on foreign food imports.
The announcement came much sooner than originally anticipated. While the administration had initially set a four-year timeline to reach this goal, the target was met within a single year of the current government’s term. To commemorate the occasion, President Prabowo joined Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman and Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan in a traditional rice-pounding ceremony, symbolizing the collective effort of the nation’s farmers and officials.
"In just one year, we have achieved self-sufficiency and are no longer dependent on other nations," the President stated in his speech, which was broadcasted nationally. He expressed deep gratitude to the farming community, noting that their hard work silenced those who doubted Indonesia’s capacity to manage its own agricultural resources.

Addressing skeptics who questioned whether this independence could be maintained, President Prabowo emphasized that this is only the beginning. The government plans to expand these efforts to other essential commodities, including corn, cassava, and garlic, aiming for comprehensive food security across multiple sectors in the coming years.
The scale of this achievement is backed by significant production data. Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman reported that national rice production for the 2025 period reached 34.17 million tons. Furthermore, government reserves held by Bulog remained robust, ending the year with approximately 3.24 million tons in storage.
Minister Amran suggested that if the current rate of domestic grain absorption continues for the next quarter, Indonesia could be positioned to export rice for the first time in its history. In recognition of these rapid advancements in the agricultural sector, President Prabowo announced his intention to bestow the Bintang Jasa Utama honor upon Minister Amran for his role in accelerating the nation’s path to food independence.
