JustUpdateOnline.com – Tokyo. A weekend fishing trip turned into a tragedy in Kashima City, Ibaraki Prefecture, resulting in the deaths of two young Indonesian nationals. The victims, both 21-year-old men participating in a technical internship program, were pulled into the ocean by a powerful wave while angling on a coastal embankment.
The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon at approximately 3:30 PM local time. According to reports, four Indonesian men were fishing together when a massive swell struck the embankment, knocking the entire group into the water. While the situation was dire, two of the men were fortunately rescued by surfers who were in the vicinity. Local authorities confirmed that the two survivors escaped the ordeal without any physical injuries.
Following the accident, the Japan Coast Guard and local police initiated an emergency search for the remaining two individuals. The Ibaraki Prefectural Police reported that the first victim was located on Sunday night, while the body of the second victim was recovered from the sea on Monday morning.
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has identified the deceased by their initials, TT and MSP. Both were residents of Kamisu City, Ibaraki, where they were employed as part of Japan’s technical trainee framework. One of the victims was specifically identified as an intern within the construction industry, though the specific sector for the second victim has not been disclosed.
In response to the tragedy, the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Tokyo has been actively coordinating with Japanese law enforcement and the Japan Coast Guard. Embassy officials are also in contact with the "kumiai"—the supervising organizations responsible for overseeing foreign interns—to manage insurance logistics and the necessary documentation for the victims.
The Indonesian government has stated that it will continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure that the administrative process and the repatriation of the remains to Indonesia are handled efficiently and in accordance with local regulations. Efforts are currently underway to provide support to the families of the deceased during this difficult time.
