JustUpdateOnline.com – Jakarta, The Indonesian government is currently orchestrating a strategic initiative to provide high-speed residential internet services at significantly reduced prices. The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) is targeting a price point of approximately Rp140,000—or at least under Rp200,000—for a 100 Mbps connection, aiming to make premium connectivity accessible to a broader segment of the population.
To achieve this, the government is focusing on the aggressive expansion of fiber optic infrastructure, specifically targeting residential neighborhoods rather than just commercial hubs. This shift toward fixed broadband is viewed as a vital step in lowering the overall cost of digital access for Indonesian families.
Economic Benefits of Residential Fiber Expansion
Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital, Nezar Patria, emphasized that high-speed access at an affordable rate will serve as a catalyst for national economic growth. He pointed out that utilizing a single high-capacity home connection is far more cost-effective for a household than having each family member rely on individual mobile data plans.
"By providing 100 Mbps for around Rp140,000, we can significantly ease the financial burden on the public," Patria stated during a recent discussion in the capital. He further explained that the ministry is prioritizing the "last mile" of connectivity, ensuring that fiber optic cables reach the doorsteps of private homes.
This initiative is expected to bolster various digital activities, including remote learning, telecommuting, and the development of home-based digital enterprises. By making the internet a shared utility within the household, the government hopes to provide a more stable and productive environment for the digital economy to thrive.
Scaling Up 5G Adoption Across the Archipelago
Beyond improving home internet, the Indonesian government is also setting its sights on the future of mobile connectivity. Currently, the adoption of 5G technology in the country remains in its early stages, with a penetration rate of less than 10 percent.
The Ministry has outlined an ambitious roadmap to increase 5G usage to between 30 and 40 percent within the next three to five years. Achieving this goal will require a massive strengthening of the nation’s digital backbone and infrastructure.
The Deputy Minister noted that the reinforcement of digital infrastructure is the primary pillar of this strategy. By expanding 5G coverage, the government intends to bridge the digital divide, ensuring that even regions currently lacking quality service can eventually benefit from the next generation of mobile technology.
While the specific timeline for the new home internet pricing and the involved service providers have yet to be fully detailed, the government remains committed to creating a more inclusive and affordable digital landscape for all Indonesians.
