JustUpdateOnline.com – SINGAPORE, A young husband and wife have been ordered to serve more than 15 years in prison each following the tragic death of their infant son, who suffered through months of physical mistreatment. The Singapore High Court delivered the sentences on Wednesday, marking the end of a harrowing case that highlighted a sustained pattern of cruelty against a defenseless eight-month-old.
The mother, 23-year-old Chloe Gan Ci Xuan, was sentenced to 15 years and three months behind bars. Her husband, 27-year-old Neo Jia Ming, received a slightly longer sentence of 16 years. The victim, Trevor Neo Yu Hin, lived a short life characterized by near-constant violence, despite the couple having access to external childcare and family support.
In her ruling, High Court Justice Hoo Sheau Peng emphasized that the defendants’ youth and lack of experience as parents were not valid excuses for their behavior. The judge observed that both parents appeared to downplay the gravity of their actions and the profound suffering they inflicted on their son.
Court documents revealed a disturbing timeline of events beginning shortly after Trevor’s birth in December 2023. The abuse reportedly started when the infant was only a few weeks old. Neo was the first to employ violent methods, such as shaking the baby or covering his face to silence his crying. Gan later adopted these same dangerous tactics.
Evidence presented in court included digital messages between the couple. In one exchange, Neo warned Gan about the risks of brain damage from shaking, yet Gan admitted to shaking the baby so hard he nearly flipped 180 degrees. On another occasion, Neo confessed to covering the child’s nose and mouth for a full minute, causing the infant to turn purple and vomit. Despite these close calls, the violence escalated to include slapping, hard pinching, and physical intimidation.

Trevor had been hospitalized twice before the fatal incident. In early 2024, he was treated after losing consciousness from being shaken. Months later, a caregiver discovered internal injuries in the baby’s mouth, which Neo later admitted were caused by him forcibly shoving his fingers into the child’s throat to stop him from crying. Although family members noticed bruises and warned the couple, the abuse continued behind closed doors.
The fatal encounter occurred on the night of September 1, 2024. Reports indicate that Gan became agitated by the baby’s crying while she was trying to rest. She repeatedly pressed a blanket over Trevor’s face to stifle his breathing. Neo, who was in the same room playing games on his phone, did not stop her. Instead, he reportedly told her to wait until the baby cried again before continuing the act. Trevor was eventually placed face-down and left alone.
When the couple realized the baby had stopped breathing later that night, their primary concern appeared to be avoiding the authorities. Rather than calling for an emergency ambulance, they took a taxi to the hospital to save money and discuss how to keep the police from getting involved. Trevor was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the hospital.
In addition to the charges related to the infant’s death, Neo also pleaded guilty to domestic violence against his wife, whom he had assaulted on multiple occasions during their marriage.
While the defense argued for leniency based on the couple’s age and potential mental health factors, the prosecution pushed for heavy sentences, citing the extreme vulnerability of the victim. Justice Hoo noted that while the duration of the abuse was shorter than in some other landmark cases, the infant’s total inability to seek help or communicate his pain made the crimes particularly egregious.
