JustUpdateOnline.com – Kuala Lumpur, former Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob appeared in court on Thursday to face criminal charges related to his failure to disclose significant personal assets. The 66-year-old politician entered a plea of not guilty during his arraignment at the Sessions Court, setting the stage for a legal battle over transparency requirements mandated by the nation’s anti-graft laws.
Allegations of Undisclosed Assets
Under Section 36(2) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act, the former leader is accused of omitting nearly US$40 million (approximately RM170 million) from his official financial declarations. The undisclosed holdings reportedly consist of a mix of local and nine different foreign currencies.
Beyond liquid assets, the prosecution alleges that Ismail Sabri failed to report several precious metal items during a filing at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya last year. These items include:
- Five Suisse Fine gold bars
- One Suisse Fine silver bar
- A single gold coin
Legal Consequences and Bail
The court has set bail at RM300,000 (roughly US$68,000) and scheduled the next procedural hearing for September 29. If the legal proceedings result in a conviction, the former Prime Minister could be sentenced to a maximum of five years in prison. Furthermore, a financial penalty of up to RM100,000 may be imposed.
Ismail Sabri, who held the country’s top office from August 2021 until late 2022, has been under the scrutiny of the MACC for several months. This specific case follows an intensive investigation into his financial affairs that concluded in mid-2025. He is the third former Malaysian head of government to face such legal challenges, following predecessors Najib Razak and Muhyiddin Yassin.
Wider Corruption Investigations
Beyond the asset disclosure case, the former premier has been linked to a wider probe involving RM700 million in government funds. Authorities are investigating whether these funds were misappropriated for the "Keluarga Malaysia" (Malaysian Family) promotional initiative, a signature policy introduced during his administration.
Earlier raids on locations described by investigators as "safe houses" led to the seizure of substantial amounts of cash, luxury watches, and over 16 kilograms of gold bullion. Several former members of his staff have also been detained in connection with these inquiries.
Health Delays
The legal proceedings were originally intended to commence on August 7. However, a delay was granted after Ismail Sabri was hospitalized at the National Heart Institute to undergo a cardiac procedure involving the installation of a pacemaker. Despite his brief tenure as the shortest-serving Prime Minister in Malaysia’s history, Ismail Sabri now faces a prolonged legal process as he attempts to clear his name.
