JustUpdateOnline.com – Jakarta, Indonesia is facing a significant public health challenge as projections indicate that the number of citizens living with dementia could reach 4 million by the year 2050. Deputy Health Minister Dante Saksono Harbuwono has issued a call to action, urging the public to stop dismissing cognitive decline as a routine part of growing older.

As the nation experiences a demographic shift toward an "aging population," life expectancy continues to rise. However, health officials emphasize that longevity alone is not a sufficient indicator of success; the focus must shift toward the quality of life and cognitive health of the elderly.

During a recent advocacy event organized by Alzheimer’s Indonesia (ALZI), Dante highlighted the urgency of the situation. He noted that without aggressive preventative measures and a change in public perception, the prevalence of dementia in Indonesia could triple or even quadruple over the next few decades. This trend mirrors a global crisis, as the World Health Organization estimates that 50 million people currently live with the condition worldwide, with roughly 10 million new cases emerging every year.

The Deputy Minister stressed that the mission of the healthcare system is not merely to extend the human lifespan but to ensure that those extra years are spent in good health and independence. "Our responsibility is to guarantee a healthy and self-sufficient old age," he remarked, noting that maintaining cognitive function is a key pillar of this goal.

The social implications of this projected surge are profound. Dementia does not only affect the individual; it places an immense emotional and logistical burden on families and caregivers. Dante pointed out that protecting the cognitive well-being of the elderly is an essential investment in the stability and history of the family unit.

To combat this looming crisis, health experts are advocating for immediate lifestyle interventions. Prevention strategies include:

  • Maintaining consistent physical activity.
  • Adopting a nutritious and balanced diet.
  • Strictly managing risk factors such as high blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
  • Engaging in daily mental exercises to keep cognitive functions sharp.

A central theme of the government’s message is the rejection of the "senility is normal" myth. Dante emphasized that society must remain vigilant and proactive rather than accepting memory loss as an inevitable consequence of aging. By recognizing early symptoms and prioritizing brain health today, Indonesia can better manage the healthcare demands of its future population.
