JustUpdateOnline.com – Putrajaya, As Malaysia prepares for its 69th Independence Day celebrations, officials from Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta have reached a critical agreement to intensify their collaborative response to worsening transboundary haze. This move comes as several regions across Malaysia report deteriorating air quality linked to ongoing forest and land fires in neighboring Indonesia.

On Wednesday morning, official data revealed that 16 locations across the country had reached "unhealthy" levels on the Air Pollutant Index (API). While this figure represents a slight improvement from the 30 areas affected the previous day, smoke continues to blanket significant portions of the Malaysian Peninsula and Sarawak. In the capital region, Cheras recorded an API of 159, while Putrajaya reached 158.

Arthur Joseph Kurup, Malaysia’s Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, confirmed the renewed commitment following a high-level telephonic discussion with Indonesian Environment Minister Jumhur Hidayat. The two nations are bracing for a potentially more severe El Niño cycle expected to peak by October 2026, which coincides with the Southwest Monsoon—a period typically associated with heightened fire risks and dry weather.

To mitigate the environmental impact, Indonesia has granted Malaysia formal permission to conduct cloud seeding operations within Indonesian territorial airspace along the shared border. Meanwhile, the Indonesian government has mobilized approximately 1,500 military personnel and deployed heavy-duty helicopters for water bombing missions to suppress hotspots. Minister Arthur also noted that Malaysia remains ready to provide direct firefighting assistance, pending cabinet approval, as a gesture of regional solidarity.

The haze has already caused significant disruption in East Malaysia. Sarawak, which shares a land border with Kalimantan, remains the most affected territory. Earlier on Wednesday, Sri Aman recorded a peak API of 166, followed closely by Serian and Samarahan. The persistent smoke has led to a visible uptick in health complications; Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad recently reported a rise in medical cases involving asthma and upper respiratory tract infections.

Under Malaysia’s National Haze Action Plan, all outdoor activities must be suspended once the API exceeds 100. If the index surpasses the 200 mark, categorized as "very unhealthy," schools and childcare centers are required to close immediately. Last week, authorities in Sarawak were forced to shut down nearly 600 schools across 10 districts for two days as air quality reached hazardous levels.

As the August 31 National Day parade in Putrajaya approaches, environmental agencies and the Malaysian Meteorological Department are maintaining 24-hour surveillance of hotspot activity. Recent satellite imagery from the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre identified over 350 hotspots across Kalimantan and Sumatra, signaling that the regional challenge of seasonal smoke remains a high priority for both governments.
