On Saturday, the veteran politician confirmed his official membership in the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI), a move that marks a definitive shift in his political trajectory and strengthens his family’s influence within the organization.
During a regional coordination gathering in Bandung, West Java, the man widely known as Jokowi presented his party identification card to the public. He was accompanied by his youngest son, Kaesang Pangarep, who currently serves as the PSI General Chair. Jokowi clarified that his formal association with the party began on October 14, 2025, suggesting he has been an internal member for a year before making the news public.
The announcement marks the final chapter of Jokowi’s long-standing relationship with the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P). For nearly two decades, PDI-P was the engine behind his meteoric rise from the mayoralty of Solo to the governorship of Jakarta, and eventually to two terms as the nation’s president. However, the alliance fractured in late 2023 when Jokowi’s eldest son, Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, ran for office alongside Prabowo Subianto rather than supporting PDI-P’s designated candidate.
Jokowi noted that he chose Bandung as the site for his announcement because of the party’s robust local infrastructure, which now extends down to the sub-district and village levels. PSI, which was established in 2014 by a group of young professionals and journalists, has struggled to secure seats in the national parliament in previous elections, falling short of the 4% threshold in both 2019 and 2024.
Political analysts suggest that Jokowi’s formal entry into PSI is a strategic maneuver aimed at the 2029 general elections. Wasisto Raharjo Jati, a researcher at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), noted that PSI now serves as a formal vehicle for Jokowi to maintain his political relevance and shield his legacy. The move also paves the way for Gibran Rakabuming Raka to potentially join the party, as the Vice President currently lacks a formal political home after his departure from PDI-P.
Dominique Nicky Fahrizal from the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) highlighted that the "Jokowi Factor" remains a potent force in Indonesian politics. His presence is expected to bolster PSI’s organizational strength and attract voters who remain loyal to the former president’s governance style.
Looking ahead to 2029, Jokowi has challenged PSI members to work tirelessly to expand their reach among religious leaders, women’s groups, and the youth. Despite potential changes to the parliamentary threshold, Jokowi expressed confidence that the party could exceed even a 7% or 8% requirement if the grassroots machinery is sufficiently powerful.
The political landscape is further complicated by Kaesang Pangarep’s intention to run for a legislative seat in Central Java, a traditional stronghold for PDI-P. Analysts predict a high-stakes "psychological battle" between the rising PSI and the established PDI-P as they vie for dominance in the coming years. For Jokowi’s family, the growth of PSI represents the acquisition of a dedicated political platform that ensures their continued influence in the nation’s governance.
